Lawmaker proposes building green energy industrial park

Taipei, May 2 (CNA) A ruling Kuomintang legislator suggested Wednesday that the government set up a green energy industrial park, amid public concerns about higher fuel prices and electricity rates. KMT Legislator Wong Chung-chun proposed that a green energy industrial park could be established within the Chiayi Science Park, using seaweed as raw material to produce energy. This would prompt fish farmers to shift to seaweed harvesting, which in turn would help alleviate the problem of land subsidence caused by fish ponds, he said. "This, coupled with a bio alcohol factory in Chiayi planned by the state-owned Taiwan Sugar Co., will create a comprehensive renewable energy industrial network," Wong said. He stressed that bioenergy industry has potential in Chiayi County, especially at a time of increased awareness for the need to conserve energy amid higher fuel prices and impending electricity rate hikes. If the government can focus on Chiayi County in its promotion of the green energy industry, it would also help the agricultural county to expand its economic base, he said.
