Taiwanese detained in Philippines on suspicion of drug possession

Manila, May 2 (CNA) A Taiwanese man was detained in the Philippines on suspicion of bringing drugs into the country, the Bureau of Immigration said Wednesday. The bureau said Philippine immigration officers thought the man surnamed Shen appeared suspicious when he arrived in Manila on April 26 and later found that he was carrying about 6 grams of drugs in his luggage. According to the Taiwan representative office in the Philippines, the pills Shen was carrying are prescription sedatives in Taiwan but are listed as controlled drugs in the Philippines. Shen, who said he is a musician on a tourism trip to the Philippines, will be released on bail if he obtains a certificate from a Taiwanese doctor proving that the drugs were for medical use, the office said. However, he will be deported and listed as persona non grata, the representative office added. (By Emerson T. Lim and Lilian Wu)
