Myanmar's Suu Kyi poised for parliament swear-in

Aung San Suu Kyi is set to be sworn in to Myanmar's military-backed parliament, heralding a new political era that comes nearly a quarter century after she began her struggle against authoritarian rule.
The 66-year-old opposition leader's entry into the legislature Wednesday cements a fragile detente between her party and the government, which has spearheaded months of unexpected reforms since taking power last year from the army.
Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party will occupy too few seats to have any real power in the assembly, which is dominated by the ruling party and the military. There are fears that the presence of the opposition lawmakers could simply legitimize the current regime.
But they're also likely to bring a level of public debate to the legislative body that has never been seen here.
