Changhua farmer donates NT$160,000 to tax office

Taipei, May 1 (CNA) A farmer in Changhua County, central Taiwan has donated NT$160,000 (US$5,500) to a local tax office, a tax official confirmed Tuesday. Lin Bo-min, chief of the tax office in Yunlin Township, said the 61-year-old farmer, surnamed Chen who comes from Xihu Township, made the cash donation a day earlier. "I took it for a hoax at first, because I couldn't believe it was true," Lin said.
"It was really touching, as it was the first time in my more than 20 years on the job that a person, especially someone with such a meagre income, was willing to contribute to the national coffers," he said.
According to Lin, the farmer, who has three adult children, ekes out a living growing scallions and cabbages.
"He said he wanted to help with the government's financial difficulties in return for its long-term care, because he has never paid any tax to the government," Lin said, adding that Chen received the money from a six-year insurance policy that had recently matured.
