Report: Juncker backs Schaeuble for eurogroup

Luxembourg's Prime Minister says Germany's Wolfgang Schaeuble would be an "ideal candidate" to succeed him as chairman of the "eurogroup" _ the regular meetings of eurozone's finance ministers.
German news website Spiegel Online reported Tuesday that Jean-Claude Juncker assured the German Finance Minister of his "full support" if he seeks to lead the 17-nation group's key meetings.
Schaeuble has never declared his ambitions, but the finance minister of Europe's biggest economy would likely be a controversial choice for chairman because of his hawkish stance on reducing deficits to tackle the continent's debt crisis.
Juncker, who made the comments at a discussion co-hosted by Der Spiegel magazine late Monday in Hamburg, announced earlier this year that he won't seek another term as eurogroup chief this summer.
