Taiwan's manufacturing sector turns sluggish in March

Taipei, April 30 (CNA) The lackluster global economy weakened Taiwan's manufacturing sector in March, but the sector's economic prospects are expected to stabilize in the second half of the year, the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER) said Monday. The institute revised the overall score of its manufacturing indicator in March to 9.12, downward by 4.49 points from an actual score of 13.61 in February, with the sector flashing a blue light for sluggishness. The manufacturing sector was buoyant in February, flashing a green light, as it benefited from higher demand over the Chinese New Year holiday period, according to the institute. The TIER said that even though prospects for the manufacturing sector are likely to improve in the second quarter of the year, the growth momentum will be limited. The TIER uses a five-color system to describe the state of the economy, with red, yellow-red, green, yellow-blue and blue representing overheated, warm, stable, cool and sluggish, respectively. A blue light is flashed when the index falls below 10.5, and a score of between 13 and 16 represents a green light, indicating stability. (By Lin Hui-chun and Nell Shen)
