Authorities in Russia play down mayor vote fraud

Prosecutors are playing down violations in a mayoral election in the south of Russia that sparked hunger strikes and street protests.
Oleg Shein, an opposition candidate for the mayor of Astrakhan, lost to a pro-Kremlin candidate in a March vote marred by reports of vote-rigging. Shein who refuses to recognize the official results has been on a hunger strike for 25 days.
The prosecutor's office in the Astrakhan region said Tuesday that its probe confirmed violations at some polling stations, but insisted they were not widespread and could not influence the outcome.
Prominent opposition leaders have backed Shein. Anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny and his supporters arrived in Astrakhan on Monday and attempted to hold a protest rally that was soon dispersed.
