Frenchwoman's case questions Mexican justice

A panel of supreme court justices in Mexico is deliberating the fate of Frenchwoman Florence Cassez, whose kidnapping conviction caused international friction and prompted a national debate about the country's troubled legal system.
Five judges will consider a proposal by fellow justice Arturo Zaldivar to free Cassez because of the inappropriate handling of her case in 2005. Zaldivar wrote that Mexican police violated her right to consular assistance and re-enacted her capture for television cameras, violating the right to presumed innocence.
Victims rights groups have strongly opposed the proposal.
The panel could decide Wednesday to free Cassez, who is serving a 60-year sentence.
