Rowntree: Lancaster lifted England from a low spot

England assistant Graham Rowntree says Stuart Lancaster is the obvious candidate to take permanent charge as head coach after dragging the national team "out of the gutter" in his interim stint in the role.
Lancaster will be interviewed for the England coaching job this week, having just guided a rejuvenated England to second place in the Six Nations and created a new culture among the squad in the wake of the team's ill-fated World Cup campaign in New Zealand.
Rowntree said Tuesday that "we were in such a low place beforehand _ Stuart has dragged us out of the gutter. To create this kind of environment is special."
Former South Africa and Italy coach Nick Mallett is widely believed to be Lancaster's main rival to replace Martin Johnson as permanent coach.
