Daimler's Mercedes sales up 20 percent in February

Daimler AG has reported strong sales in February for its Mercedes-Benz luxury brand, helped by booming business in China where monthly sales surpassed those in the U.S. for the first time.
Worldwide sales for Mercedes cars and SUVs jumped 20 percent compared with the same month a year ago, to 95,647 vehicles, the company said Monday.
In China, unit sales rose 57 percent to 19,205 vehicle, ahead of the U.S., where the company sold 18,080 vehicles. U.S. sales were up 17 percent.
The company did well even in Western Europe outside Germany, where consumers have been unsettled by Europe's government debt crisis, with sales up 9.3 percent.
Germany's luxury automakers reaped bumper earnings last year thanks to strong demand in emerging markets in Asia and South America and a tentative economic recovery in the U.S.
