MAC reiterates sovereignty and independence of ROC

Taipei, March 5 (CNA) The Republic of China (ROC) is a sovereign and independent nation and maintaining cross-Taiwan Strait peace is the responsibility of both sides, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said Monday as China reiterated its opposition to Taiwan's independence. Taiwan insists on maintaining the status quo of "no unification, no independence and no use of force" in the Taiwan Strait, Deputy MAC Minister Liu Te-shun said in response to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's opening address of the fifth session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing.
Wen said "opposition to Taiwan independence, recognition of the '1992 consensus,' consolidation of the results of cooperation and exchanges, and promotion of peaceful cross-strait ties" had become the common hope of the Taiwanese and Chinese people.
The "1992 consensus" refers to what the ruling Kuomintang describes as a tacit cross-strait understanding that there is only "one China," with each side free to interpret the meaning of the phrase. Liu said Taiwan's government has continued to promote systematic negotiations with China on the three principles of "first the urgent, then the gradual; first the easy, then the difficult; first economics, then politics." The two sides should "put aside controversies and face reality" in developing reciprocal and win-win relations, Liu said.
Meanwhile, cultural exchanges between the people of China and Taiwan have been smooth with many interactive platforms, said Hua Shih-chieh, director of the MAC's cultural affairs office.
Taiwan is known formally as the Republic of China.
