PR guv: New technology will help police patrols

Puerto Rico's governor has announced that more than a dozen police cruisers have been outfitted with new camera systems that can check license plates in an instant.
Fortuno announced Sunday that a nearly $1 million investment is paying for "license-plate reader" technology in 15 patrol cars across the U.S. Caribbean island, which had a record 1,117 homicides last year.
Using a similar technology that toll booth readers use, the cruiser cameras can scan plates of nearby cars while an officer drives. It then speedily compares the plates with those in a database of stolen cars and vehicles linked to fugitives.
Police chief Emilio Diaz Colon says the license plate readers are part of an ongoing effort to modernize the force.
