Gas price protests cut off Chile region

Thousands of residents in the far southern Chilean region of Aysen are suffering from food and fuel shortages as protesters block roads over high energy prices.
Truck drivers have stopped vital shipments to the region through road closures, while social groups demand a cut in fuel prices.
The protesters had set a Sunday deadline for the government to grant their demands. The roadblocks began three weeks ago in the region, where fuel costs about 40 percent higher than in the capital of Santiago.
Federal Energy Minister Rodrigo Alvarez had met with protesters in remote Aysen, but the truck drivers rejected his request to clear the roads.
