Official resigns over outbreak of bird flu

Taipei, March 4 (CNA) An agriculture official has resigned amid accusations following an outbreak of bird flu, the Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture (COA) said Sunday. Hsu Tien-lai, director of the council's Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, tendered his resignation, which was later approved by COA Minister Chen Bao-ji, the council said. The resignation came one day after Taiwan recorded the first outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza, resulting in 57,500 chickens culled in the Tainan and Changhua areas.
