Chiayi pig farmers to join protest against U.S. beef

Taipei, March 3 (CNA) Pig farmers in Chiayi County will attend a huge Taipei rally on March 8 to demonstrate against any move to lift the ban on imports of U.S. beef that contain residues of the feed additive ractopamine, an industry representative said Saturday. "Pig farmers from around Taiwan will travel to Taipei March 8 and participate in the demonstration in front of the Council of Agriculture (COA) to voice their opposition to imports of U.S. beef that contain the leanness-enhancing drug ractopamine," said Lin Chiu-kuei, head of Chiayi County Swine Association. "Our association will mobilize some 1,000 people to take part in the demonstration," Lin added. Liu Sheng-jen, president of the Republic of China Swine Association, once again urged the government to maintain its ban on ractopamine and not allow the sale of meat that contains traces of the drug because of pressure frro the U.S. Meanwhile, Liu pointed out that a lack of consumer confidence, due to the debate over ractopamine, has resulted in falling pork prices recently.
