Report: UK police eyeing privatizing some patrols

A newspaper report says Britain's police force is considering bringing in private contractors to investigate some crimes and patrol neighborhoods.
The Guardian says two police forces, West Midlands and Surrey, are asking security firms to bid for contracts valued at up to 1.5 billion ($2.4 billion) over seven years to take over some services that are currently carried out by officers.
The newspaper reported Saturday that it had seen a briefing note sent to companies saying all services that "can be legally delegated to the private sector" are potentially up for contract.
Britain's Home Office said in a statement Saturday that private companies will not be able to arrest suspects, nor will they be solely responsible for investigating crime.
