University in China takes attendance seriously

Taipei, March 3 (CNA) Low attendance rates in college may be a universal problem, but a university in Nanjing, China has gone so far as to snap photos of students in the classroom as a way to boost attendance. Before each class begins, attendance takers at the School of Chinese Language and Culture at Nanjing Normal University stand at the podium to take photos of the teacher and then students in the classroom, reported Jschina.com.cn, an online news website based in Jiangsu Province. The strict new approach has met with mixed reviews from students and teachers. Some students criticized that only lousy teachers need to take attendance to keep students coming to class. But the college said that taking photos of the students to discourage them from skipping class was only a way to make sure the attendance was high and to be "responsible to students who have attended classes."
