'The Taiwan Oyster' to open Urban Normad Film Fest

Taipei, March 3 (CNA) A black comedy "The Taiwan Oyster" featuring the Taiwan experience of U.S. director Mark Jarrett will open the 11th Urban Normad Film Fest in Taipei next month, it was learned Saturday. "The Taiwan Oyster" uses the format of the classic American road movie to portray two expat kindergarten teachers' experience in Taiwan as they embark on a quixotic odyssey to bury a fellow countryman. The film, shot in the east coast of Taiwan, also captures the island's breathtaking coastal beauty along the way. It has been selected one of eight films from 1,112 submissions for narrative feature competition at the 2012 SXSW Film Awards this year. Based in Austin, Texas, the SXSW is one of the biggest independent film festivals in the United States. Jarrett is scheduled to take part in the premier of the film in Taiwan and meet with fans at a seminar after the screening. He said that what he had hoped to do the most with the film was to show it to the Taiwanese audience, and he was happy to see his wish come true. After graduating from the University of Georgia, Jarrett moved to Taichung, Taiwan in 1999, where he taught English for three years. While in Taiwan, Jarrett co-founded a literary magazine called "The Taiwan Oyster," after seeing a lot of oyster farms in nearby Changhua County. Jarrett returned to the U.S. in 2001 and began working in the film industry. "The Taiwan Oyster," is the first film he has directed. He said that he was inspired after reading William Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying." In addition to "The Taiwan Oyster," other films, including "If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front", which won the Documentary Editing Award of the 2011 Sundance Festival, will be shown at the Urban Normad Film Fest that is scheduled to open April 12 at Huashan Creative Park.
