Italy to pursue high-speed rail link with France

Italy's government is vowing to continue construction of a high-speed rail line linking the country to France despite violent protests.
Premier Mario Monti's office announced the decision after a meeting Friday night following days of protests that have blocked highways in northwest Italy. The government says completing construction will boost jobs and infrastructure, cut travel time between Milan and Paris from seven to four hours and allow more rail cargo volume and lower cargo transport costs.
Opponents of the project between Turin and the French border fear drilling will release harmful materials into the atmosphere and ruin nature's beauty.
The government also pledged to crack down on violent protests. Violent demonstrations have occurred sporadically for years, including before and after Turin's 2006 Winter Olympics.
