Comics feast on tap for Taipei book fair visitors

Taipei, Jan. 30 (CNA) The Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE), to be held Feb. 1-6, will showcase a wide array of comic strips, animations, graphic novels and video games at its comics hall and allow fans to meet famous cartoonists. The 5,500 square-meter hall and its surrounding areas will hold close to 100 book launch and signing events, forums, comic lessons, puppet shows and gift-giving games, the fair organizer said. A "cosplay" contest, in which participants dress as characters in comic books, will also take place at the fair at the Taipei World Trade Center. Yumiko Igarashi, author of the popular Japanese manga series "Candy Candy," "With Hello Kitty" illustration artist POP, and Noriaki Sugiyama, a Japanese voice actor known for his role as Sasuke Uchiha in the manga series "Naruto," will be on hand to greet their fans. Chinese comic artists Xia Da, Yao Feila, and Zhang Lian and Hong Kong martial arts novelist Jozev will also make appearances. Aside from its comics section, the book fair will feature a hall featuring general books and another showcasing children's books. The general books hall, with a "green reading" theme this year, will exhibit trends in digital reading pushed by technology such as e-readers and cloud computing that allow the "green" storage of knowledge and literature. Over 400 publishers from 60 countries around the world have registered for this year's fair. The show attracted a record 590,000 visitors last year. (By Christie Chen)
