Computer, information sectors bearish on economic outlook: poll

Taipei, Jan. 19 (CNA) Taiwan's computer and information industry suppliers have a bearish outlook for the country's economy over the next three months due to the global economic slowdown, according to the results of a survey released Thursday. The survey, conducted by the Taipei Computer Association (TCA), found that 22 percent of the respondents were optimistic over the January-March period of 2012, while 55 percent were pessimistic and 23 percent had no opinion. The business climate index, which is compiled by the TCA, fell 0.12 points to 1.26 in 2012 Q1 from 1.38 in the previous quarter, marking a record low since the survey was first conducted in 2010 Q4. The survey also found that confidence over the first quarter of 2012 among international buyers also dropped from 1.84 to 1.76. "It shows that Taiwan's IT suppliers are quite worried amid the European debt crisis and the gloomy economic prospects, as Taiwan is an export-oriented country," the TCA said in a statement. The survey was conducted last Dec. 13-28 among 1,140 local suppliers planning to attend Computex Taipei 2012, with 367 valid responses. The world's second-largest computer trade show is scheduled to be held June 5-9 at both the Taipei World Trade Center and the Nangang Exhibition Hall in Taipei. (By James Lee)
