Five suspects in heist arrested

Taipei, Jan. 9 (CNA) Five suspects in connection with a heist that took place last week in northern Taiwan have been arrested, police said. On Jan. 2, three employees of Taiwan Business Bank's Houli branch were robbed by a gang after they collected NT$1.27 million in cash from a restaurant near the Liyutan Reservoir in Miaoli to deposit back in their bank. On their way back to work, their car was stopped by a ring headed by the alleged leader surnamed Chiu in a staged traffic accident and were robbed at gunpoint. Chiu, in his 50s, is said to have planned the heist after learning that the restaurant works with the bank to collect its cash on a regular basis. Chiu and four of his accomplices in the heist were arrested, but one suspect was still at large, police said. (By Kuan Juei-ping and Lilian Wu)
