Philippine ex-poll chief, lawyer ordered arrested

A Philippine judge has ordered the arrest of an already-detained former elections chief and his lawyer after they alleged the judge was involved in extortion.
Judge Jesus Mupas gained prominence for ordering the arrests last year of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and former elections Chairman Benjamin Abalos. Both were indicted on non-bailable charges of helping rig 2007 senatorial elections to favor Arroyo's candidates.
Abalos and his lawyer Brigido Dulay recently alleged that people who introduced themselves as the judge's emissaries tried to extort a large amount of money from Abalos in exchange for favorable rulings.
Mupas denied the allegation and ordered on Monday that Abalos and Dulay be fined and arrested.
