Taiwan's 2011 trade surplus 3rd-highest in history

Taipei, Jan. 9 (CNA) Taiwan generated a trade surplus of US$26.69 billion in 2011, the third-highest level in history, according to Ministry of Finance statistics released Monday. Accumulated exports last year reached US$308.3 billion, posing an annual growth of 12.3 percent, while imports grew 12.1 percent to US$281.61 billion. The two figures are both the highest on record, ministry officials said. The statistics show that in December, exports amounted to US$23.95 billion, up by 0.6 percent over the same month of last year, while imports for the month reached US$21.63 billion, down by 2.7 percent over the same period of last year. The trade balance for December was favorable, amounting to US$2.32 billion, representing an annual growth of 46 percent, the tallies show. (By Feng Chao and Elizabeth Hsu)
