UN praises Fiji for ending emergency rule

The U.N. human rights chief says Fiji's military government took "a step in the right direction" by lifting emergency rule imposed since 2009, but needs to do more.
Navi Pillay, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, says the South Pacific nation must stop "silencing criticism" through criminal charges, arbitrary detention and other forms of intimidation.
In a statement Monday she also cautioned the government against using new regulations to "replicate" emergency rule.
The government's military ruler, Commodore Frank Bainimarama dropped emergency rule on Saturday, a day after imposing new regulations on public order.
Bainimarama, who seized power in a coup in late 2006, likened the new regulations to tactics against terrorism and hate crimes.
