Bridge in Taitung to be named after local philanthropist

Taipei, Jan. 9 (CNA) A new bridge in Taitung City will be named after Chen Shu-chu, a local vegetable vendor who made Time magazine's 2010 list of the world's 100 most influential people for her acts of philanthropy, in the hope that others will follow her example, announced Taitung County's government Monday. Last May, during rehabilitation of Taiping River, the eastern Taiwan county government decided to tear down the aging Fengli Bridge and construct a new larger bridge to relieve traffic congestion. After reviewing suggestions submitted by the public, Taitung County Magistrate Justin Huang decided to name the new construction Shuchu Bridge to honor Chen's kind heart and spirit of generosity. "Are you sure? I didn't donate any money toward the bridge," Chen responded when the magistrate visited her to get her consent. Huang noted that it was very rare for a person from Taitung to become renowned internationally, let alone for philanthropic deeds. He hoped that Chen's good deeds would be remembered for a very long time. The new bridge is scheduled to be inaugurated in March. (By Tyson Lu and Nell Shen) enditem/npw
