US expels Venezuelan diplomat

The US State Department on Sunday said that it had ordered a Venezuelan diplomat based in Miami to leave the country.

The US has ordered Livia Acosta Noguera, the Venezuelan Consul General in Miami, to leave the country by Jan 10, State Department spokesman Will Ostick said.

The Venezuelan Embassy in Washington was told that Acosta Noguera was declared “persona non grata (an unwelcome person),” Ostick said, without giving a reason.

CNN said Acosta Noguera was the subject of a report on Univision, the Spanish-language television network, that said she was part of a group seeking to gain illegal access to the websites for the White House, Department of Defense, Federal Bureau of Investigation and US nuclear plants.

Juan Carlos Munoz Ledo, a Mexican student, told Univision that he recorded a 2008 conversation with Acosta Noguera, who at the time was the Venezuelan Embassy’s cultural attache in Mexico, in which she said she could send information obtained by hackers to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, CNN reported. Chavez has denied the claim.

The decision to expel the diplomat also coincided with the Obama administration’s expression of disapproval for Venezuela’s willingness to maintain friendly relations with Iran, despite international efforts to isolate it over its nuclear program.
