Taiwan's first student labor union formed in NTU

Taipei, Jan. 8 (CNA) A group of mostly graduate students who are employed as teaching assistants (TAs) at National Taiwan University (NTU) in Taipei established Taiwan's first student labor union on Saturday. The student labor union, comprising over 40 TAs, elected its board directors and supervisors at its inaugural ceremony the same day, said Lin Kai-heng, head of the union's organizing committee, Sunday. Lin said that as many TAs have had salaries cut without advance notice or worked extra hours but received unreasonable pay. After their petitions for improved working conditions went unanswered, they decided to form the union. Lin said the union will seek to protect the rights of not only TAs but also other non-teaching staff and non-civil servant workers on the campus. Some university graduates serve as TAs. The union will officially register with the Labor Department of the Taipei City on Jan. 18. (By Hu Chih-wei and Ann Chen)
