Albanian ex-premier says jail request is political

An Albanian former prime minister says a prosecutor's request for his imprisonment on corruption charges is political and he may take his case to the European Court of Human Rights.
Ilir Meta, leader of the Socialist Movement for Integration Party _ who served as prime minister from 1999 to 2002 and whose resignation as deputy premier and foreign minister last year caused a severe political crisis _ was speaking Saturday.
Prosecutors on Friday asked for a two-year prison term for Meta for improperly trying to influence former economy minister Dritan Prifti over a state tender for a hydropower station.
Prifti has released a video of the alleged incident. Meta claims the video is fabricated.
The court will hand down the verdict Jan. 16.
