Konrad Niedzwiedzki of Poland won the men's 500 meters at the European speed skating championships Saturday, edging out compatriot Zbigniew Brodka by 0.01 second.
Niedzwiedzki finished in 36.89 seconds to retain his title from the race he won last year in Renon, Italy. Jan Blokhuijsen of the Netherlands was third.
In the men's 5,000, Olympic champion Sven Kramer of the Netherlands won in 6 minutes, 31.82 seconds, beating compatriot Jan Blokhuijsen by more than 4 seconds.

After two races, Blokhuijsen leads the overall standings ahead of Kramer and Havard Bokko of Norway. The men's all-around European title will be decided Sunday in the 1,500 and 10,000.
In the only women's race of the day, Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic won the 1,500 in 2:03.64, ahead of Linda de Vries of the Netherlands and Russia's Yuliya Skokova.
