Eldar Roenning of Norway won his first Tour de Ski stage Saturday by edging out Alex Harvey and defending champion Dario Cologna in the 20-kilometer Classic Mass Start on Friday.
Roenning finished strongly to finish in 1 hour, 2.2 seconds, just over a second in front of Canada's Harvey and Cologna of Switzerland.
Cologna increased his overall lead to 1 minute, 22 seconds in front of second-place Petter Northug, ahead of the last of the nine stages to be staged on Sunday.
Northug finished fourth and the Norwegian needs something dramatic on the grueling climb up Mount Cermis to overtake Cologna.
Roenning climbed to 20th in the overall standings.
