Chacon launches Spanish Socialist leadership bid

The former defense minister in the Socialist government that lost the recent general elections in Spain has launched her bid to become party leader.
Carme Chacon said at a meeting in the southern town of Olula del Rio she would run against leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba who led the party in the elections that were won by a landslide by the conservative party of Mariano Rajoy, who is now prime minister.
Chacon told party members Saturday she had chosen her father's birthplace "where he'd been the town mechanic" to announce her decision. Chacon, who was a minister in Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's cabinet from 2008, praised her rival as "the best interior minister Spain has ever had."
Elections are due in just under a month at the party's general congress.
