US: Iran 'flailing' for friends in Latin America

The Obama administration is calling Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's planned tour of Latin America a sign of desperation as international sanctions increasingly isolate his country.
The State Department said Friday that Ahmadinejad's visit to Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba and Ecuador shows Iran is "desperate for friends" and "flailing around" to find them as the sanctions bite. It also said now is not the time for countries to expand ties with Iran, which continues to defy pressure to prove its nuclear program is peaceful.
Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the international community should make clear to Iran that it will only grow more isolated if it fails to comply with demands to provide details about its nuclear ambitions.
