Chile backs off removing 'dictatorship' from texts

Chile is backing off a controversial plan to remove the word "dictatorship" from school textbooks in reference to the military government of Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
A political uproar resulted when President Sebastian Pinera's new Education Minister Harald Beyer announced the plan. Beyer said schoolchildren should be taught a more "general" term, calling Pinochet's 17-year-rule a "military regime."
Senator Isabel Allende, whose father was ousted in Pinochet's coup, called the change unacceptable.
Beyer is now backtracking, saying the proposal will be "revised" and he "never meant to deny the undemocratic nature of the military regime, nor the human rights violations that resulted."
More than 3,000 members of the opposition were killed during the military government.
