Locally grown papayas shipped to China

Taipei, Jan. 6 (CNA) Six metric tons of papayas grown in southern Taiwan left for Shanghai Friday, the first shipment of a targeted 100 tons of papaya exports to China this year. The Linnei papaya, grown in the township of Linnei in Yunlin County, is famous for its bright red flesh and strong aroma and has been sold to Canada and Japan. It is grown and harvested under a detailed production tracing system. Legislator Hsu Shu-po of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT), who played a role in the papaya shipment, said he would continue to promote the export of Yunlin fruit, including oranges, Douliou tangerines, Gukeng pineapples and Cihtong starfruits, to China and global markets. He said Chinese fruit suppliers and supermarket chains had purchased nearly 800 tons of oranges grown in Yunlin since last December. He estimated that total fruit exports to China would reach 1,400 tons in 2012, including 1,200 tons of oranges and 200 tons of other varieties. (By Yeh Tzu-kang and Jamie Wang)
