Chile to waive visa fee for Taiwanese tourists

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Taiwanese nationals applying for tourist visas to Chile will not have to pay an application fee starting Jan. 1, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced Saturday. Under the principle of mutual benefit and reciprocity, Chilean passport holders will also be exempt as of Sunday from application fees for tourist visas to Taiwan, the MOFA said in a press statement. Obtaining a visa, however, is still required because the two sides have not yet reached a consensus on a visa waiver agreement. At present, Chile charges US$50 for a single-entry visa and US$100 for a multiple-entry visa. The decision to waive visa application fees is expected to strengthen the already close ties between Santiago and Taipei and encourage further exchanges between the two countries, according to the MOFA.
