Drunk driving No. l factor in deaths within 24 hours of accidents

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Drunk driving caused the highest number of traffic accidents that resulted in deaths within 24 hours in the first 11 months of this year, according to statistics published by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI). The MOI said there were 205,707 traffic accidents that resulted in deaths or injuries in Taiwan from January to November, up 3.28 percent from the same period last year. Of those, 1,847 traffic accidents resulted in 1,919 deaths on the spot or within 24 hours of the time the accident occurred, with 20.47 percent of the deaths caused by drunk driving. In terms of vehicles, motorcycles resulted in the most deaths within the 24-hour frame, accounting for 47.43 percent of all fatalities, followed by automobiles (23.23 percent), and trucks (18.57 percent). The statistics also revealed that the accidents leading to deaths within short time frames were most likely to occur between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. (10.72 percent) and between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. (9.6 percent).
