56 Taiwanese inmates in Thailand granted special pardon

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) The king of Thailand granted special pardons to thousands of inmates, including 56 Taiwan nationals, as part of his 84th birthday celebrations. According to Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB), most of the 56 Taiwanese inmates were convicted on charges of telecommunications fraud. Ten of the inmates are on the country's wanted list and two of them were escorted back to Taiwan late Thursday, it added. Another 27 of the pardoned inmates have been identified as members of fraud rings, and the CIB said it would investigate if they were involved in any other fraud cases in Taiwan. The Thai king announced an amnesty in early December for inmates sentenced to fewer than three years in prison or prisoners aged older than 60. About 26,000 people will benefit from the pardon.
