Officials and news reports say 33 people have been killed in heavy rains and winds unleashed by a cyclone over India's southeastern coast.
M. Jayalalitha, the top elected official of Tamil Nadu state, says the storm claimed 26 lives in four districts of the state on Friday, including when houses collapsed. Some victims died of electrocution.
The Press Trust of India news agency said an additional seven people died in and around the southern town of Pondicherry.
Weather officials say Cyclone Thane weakened overnight.
