Temporary jobs planned for disadvantaged over Lunar New Year

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) As many as 200 temporary jobs will be created for the homeless and disadvantaged people in the runup to Chinese New Year and for a 12-day period in early February, the Taipei city government said on Friday. Chen Yeh-shin, head of the city's labor department, said the short-term jobs -- offered between Jan. 9-20 and Feb. 6-17 -- are designed to financially help homeless or economically disadvantaged people get through the Chinese New Year, which fall on Jan. 23. They will be assigned cleaning jobs in public places with an hourly salary of NT$107 (US$3.53), Chen said. Upon completing 20 days of employment, they will each receive a maximum salary of NT$17,120, he added. The announcement came amid a controversy sparked by a video clip titled "Stop Hosing the Homeless" that was uploaded to YouTube on Dec. 23. The video, which showed a cleaning crew hosing down homeless people in the Monga Park in Taipei's Wanhua District, caused an outcry over the Christmas weekend. Although the city government said the cleaners in the video clip were just doing their job and that the city would never hose down street people in order to drive them away, it still faced a storm of public criticism about its failure to provide a solution for the many homeless people that sleep rough in Wanhua.
