Foreign minister to be on overseas tour during presidential poll

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) The foreign minister said Friday he will embark on a two-week tour to three of Taiwan's diplomatic allies in Central America and Africa next week and will not be able to cast his vote in the Jan. 14 presidential election. Leaving Jan. 3, Timothy Yang will serve as a special envoy for President Ma Ying-jeou at the swearing-in ceremonies for the new leaders of Nicaragua, Guatemala and Gambia. Yang confirmed that he will be staying over in the United States and Europe, but emphasized that the arrangement was "pure and simple." The trip is expected to take as long as 19 days because of all the transfer flights required to travel across such large distances, explained the minister, who is scheduled to arrive back in Taipei on Jan. 21. Meanwhile, it was reported in the Chinese-language United Evening News earlier the same day that Yang might take the opportunity to visit countries that do not have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Yang might be staying over in New York or Miami and Paris, it said. (By Nancy Liu)
