Taiwan warmly welcomes 6 millionth foreign visitor

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) Taiwan's 6 millionth foreign visitor this year, a 37-year-old housewife from South Korea, was given a gala welcome Friday at the Executive Yuan and showered with gifts. Kim Hee Kyung threw her hands in the air in excitement as Vice Premier Sean Chen presented her with NT$600,000 ($19,811) worth of Taiwan-made products and a commemorative colored glass trophy. "Yay! I am not sure if I have as many as 600 friends in Korea to give each of them a gift," she said as she accepted the 600 gift items. Kim, traveling with four family members, arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday on a flight from Seoul for a six-day visit. She was logged as the 6 millionth foreign visitor this year as she passed through the immigration checkpoint. In her first few days in Taiwan, Kim said, she and her family have visited the National Palace Museum, National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and famous local gourmet Din Tai Fung Dumpling House. Kim said she was most impressed by the convenient living environment in Taiwan, in particular the mass transportation system and the variety of stores. "I will tell my Korean friends to come here," she said. "Hopefully I can also become the 10 millionth foreign tourist to Taiwan." The Executive Yuan said it is confident that by 2016, foreign visitor arrivals to Taiwan will reach 10 million. "Our goal is to show the global community the hospitality of the Taiwanese people," Chen said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
