Ventilation to be improved for underground Shilin Night Market

The Taipei city government will improve ventilation at the new Shilin Night Market that has been blasted for its poor air quality, according to a city official yesterday.
The city government will install additional fans and smoke extractors, as well as adding vents to air conditioning outlets in the night market by Dec. 30 to improve air quality, Ting Jo-ting, director of the Taipei City Market Administration Office, said during a radio interview on Wednesday.
The new Shilin Night Market, which reopened Dec. 25 in a renovated basement and has been much-vaunted by city officials, has come under attacks from both customers and vendors about poor ventilation in the underground area that holds 94 food stalls, many of which sell fried or barbecued food.
The food vendors had been operating in a temporary establishment in the area until they were moved to the basement in a nearby building.
Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin acknowledged the problems in ventilation and traffic control and said the city government will “do its best” to address them.
Ting said the city government will consider installing additional ventilation equipment.
