Thailand to help flood-affected Taiwan businesses: official

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) Thailand has responded positively to Taiwan's requests that it help Taiwanese businesses recover from the recent severe floods in Thailand, Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Lin Sheng-chung said Thursday. Lin said in a telephone interview with CNA that he had passed on a number of concerns among the Taiwanese businesses in Thailand to the Thai government during a four-day visit to Bangkok. The vice minister said the businesses hoped that Thailand's department of industry could remove duties on imported equipment and raw materials. Moreover, Lin announced, Thailand plans to provide flood-affected businesses in Thailand a 3 percent low interest rate loan totaling 210 billion Thai baht (US$6.6 billion) over a seven-year period. Considered institional investors in Thailand, Taiwanese businesses can also benefit from the loan. Meanwhile, flood insurance payments that the businesses asked for will also be discussed soon, Lin added. Lin said that the delegation visited some of the over 100 Taiwanese firms affected in the floods that hit Thailand over the last few months. Some 20 businesses were quite seriously damaged, he added. As of the end of October, Taiwan had at least 3,000 businesses in Thailand and their investments totaled US$12.8 billion, making it the country's third-largest foreign investor after Japan and the U.S. The Thai authorities estimated more than 1,000 investment projects were affected by the floods.
