Sri Lanka grabbed five wickets in the afternoon session Thursday to race toward a breakthrough victory as South Africa slumped to 136-6 in its second innings on day four of the second test.
Sri Lanka was on the verge of its first test win in South Africa and first in 16 matches after another batting slump left the Proteas a hefty 313 runs behind with four sessions still to play.
Dilhara Fernando and Rangana Herath took two wickets each and Sri Lanka 5-50 in the session to march toward a series-leveling win at Kingsmead.
The revived Sri Lankans were also heading for a dramatic turnaround in the three-match contest after losing the first test by an innings. South Africa were set for a fourth straight test defeat in Durban.
