Costco fined for wrong labeling of apples, false advertising

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) Wholesale membership distributor Costco has been fined NT$200,000 (US$6,605) for false labeling of apples and misleading advertising, the Cabinet-level Fair Trade Commission said Thursday. The New Zealand Queen apples and Rose apples promoted in Costco's catalogue are wrongly labeled as New Zealand Queen Rose apples in English. Both varieties share the same labeling in Chinese but their English labeling should be distinguished, according to the commission. The commission also said the advertisement gave customers the impression that Costco members could buy the apples at a lower price during a sale between May 27 and June 5. However, the apples that were put on sale in Costco's Hsinchu, Taichung and Kaohsiung warehouses were actually New Zealand Pacific Queen and Fuji apples, the commission noted. The company admitted the inconsistency between the advertisement content and the actual commodity being sold, the commission said. (By Wu Ching-chun and Kendra Lin)
