Romanian mayor detained over bribe charges

Authorities have detained the mayor of the Transylvanian city of Cluj on suspicion that he took bribes of almost (EURO)100,000 ($136,000) in exchange for handing out cleaning and parking contracts.
Anti-corruption prosecutors detained Sorin Apostu, a member of the ruling Democratic Liberal Party, late Wednesday and have called for his arrest. His wife Maria Apostu and three businessmen are also being questioned in the case.
Prosecutors said Thursday that between 2009 and 2011, Apostu, a lawyer, helped her husband create false consultaning companies that received cash in exchange for city hall contracts.
Apostu's lawyer Gheorghita Mateut says his client is innocent. Cluj is one of the biggest cities in Romania.
