NGO asks men to join anti-violence against women campaign

Taipei, Nov. 9 (CNA) Members of the Garden of Hope Foundation (GHF) took to the streets wearing purple-and-white ribbons Wednesday to urge men to join an anti-violence toward women movement. At a press conference to announce the foundation's"Love Women, Stop Violence"campaign, the organization produced an outline of a "Taiwan version of V-men," while male volunteers shared their experiences. V-men is the male arm of V-day, a global activist movement aimed at stopping violence against women. V-men are against violence, advocate no use of violence against their partners, are sweet valentines, vagina-friendly and create victory in their relationships with women by treasuring the women around them and committing good deeds, according to GHF officials. The Taiwanese version of V-men includes"replace criticism with praise," "hug don't batter," "good men do not buy sex,""be humorous without making dirty jokes"and "do something good for women." The foundation noted that in Taiwan, most sex offenders are men and few men engage in prevention campaigns, which is why the organization hopes to target the male population and design promotions to educate and prevent gender crimes. The purple-and-white ribbons worn during the march were designed as a combination of the purple ribbon that denotes the U.N.'s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women that takes place every Nov. 25, and the white ribbon that marks Canada's anti-violence against women White Ribbon Campaign. Members of the White Ribbon Campaign also attended the Taipei march. The foundation specializes in helping young women and girls caught in the sex industry. (By Hsu Chih-wei and C.J. Lin)
