Opposition ends support for Romania Senate speaker

The opposition Social Democracy Party leader has asked the Senate speaker to step down.
Victor Ponta told lawmakers Monday that party leaders have asked ask Mircea Geoana, who is also a member of the same party, to voluntarily quit as Senate speaker, the second most powerful post in Romania after the president.
Ponta said the party had voted for one of his political allies to replace Geoana.
Geoana, a former foreign minister, is refusing the quit and says the move would benefit President Traian Basescu.
Geoana was defeated by Basescu in the 2009 presidential runoff.
Senate will have to vote on whether Geoana should be replaced.
