With both Giuseppe Rossi and Antonio Cassano recovering from surgery, the chances that Italy's two starting forwards will recover in time for the European Championship are slim.
So coach Cesare Prandelli wants to "go down a new road" for his attack.
Speaking ahead of upcoming friendlies with Poland and Uruguay, Prandelli has mentioned up to four new possibilities for his forward line, adding that he doesn't want to put too much pressure on presumed replacement Mario Balotelli.
Prandelli says he's thinking about pairing Alessandro Matri with Giampaolo Pazzini, Balotelli with Pablo Osvaldo, Pazzini with Osvaldo, or involving Simone Pepe in a 4-3-3.
Rossi recently had knee surgery and Cassano is recovering from heart surgery.
